OMICRON is delighted to announce that the project has successfully published two intelligent road intervention processes as CEN Workshop Agreements (CWAs), in conjunction with the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). CWA 18175 covers ‘Road maintenance operations guided by XR technologies combined with a robotic modular platform’, while CWA 18176 refers to ‘Decision Support System for Highway Maintenance planning’.
“This is a very important milestone for OMICRON. Not all research and development projects reach this first level of standardisation, so many thanks to all the partner organisations involved to achieve this and increase outreach.”
José Solís Hernández, OMICRON project coordinator, CEMOSA
The two CWAs were developed and approved by Jose Solís-Hernández and Paula López Arévalo of CEMOSA, Alice Consilvio and Mohammad Abbasi of Università degli Studi di Genova, Themis Anastasiou of Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems and Automation, Ander Ansuategi of Tekniker, Rafael Martínez and Miguel Ángel Aragón of EIFFAGE INFRAESTRUCTURAS, Jesús Rodríguez of UPM, Mara Van Welie of European Science Communication Institute, Thibaut Le Doeuff of CERIB and Gauthier Michaux of SPW, with the secretariat support of Javier Idiago of UNE, the Spanish association for standardisation.
The OMICRON CWAs focus on two areas of development within this EU–funded project, which aimed to foster the industrialisation and automation of road construction, inspection and maintenance technologies for safer and more cost-efficient road infrastructure and asset management.

‘Road maintenance operations guided by XR technologies combined with a robotic modular platform’
Specifies a protocol that aims to cover the usage of extended reality (XR) technologies in road maintenance operations in combination with a Robotic Modular Platform. The methodology involves the use of AR (augmented reality) for on-road operator support, with digital instructions and communication with other technologies such as V2X (vehicle-to-everything) for alerts. In addition, the use of VR (virtual reality) for training and for teleoperation by a remote operator is also considered.

What is a CWA?
A CEN Workshop Agreement is a type of standardisation document that is developed collaboratively among interested stakeholders, the CEN community and CENELEC, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization. The creation and approval of a CWA by this community is an important step for the scale-up, innovation, and results exploitation activities of any project.
